Sib. 7.5: Very frequent crashes while editing
Posted by Ed Shenk - 23 Oct 10:23PM (edited 24 Oct 03:12PM)
I have had crashes since 7.5 came out. I never had a crash in the three years before that. Even my 7.1 version crashes since 7.5 was installed. This was using Windows 7. The crashes started after Daniel departed with his team.
I decided to build a new computer with Windows 10 and see how Sibelius worked with that. I still get crashes and continue with my Ctrl-S save very frequently. The Windows 10 machine has a new kind of crash when editing text. I get this error:
Runtime Error!
Program C:Program FilesAvidSibelius 7.5Sibelius.exe R6025 pure virtual function call.
I'm using short instrument names and editing the names from Hn. to Hn 1, Hn 2 etc for making videos. I get one to three crashes just editing 5 names. The computer has a GigaByte Board with Intel quad core 3.5 GHz, 32 GB ram, Realtech HD Audio, 1 TB SSD. I updated the Realtech Drivers as suggested by Laurence's post. Any ideas.

Similar problem on different set-up. Running Sib 7.5.1 on Mac OS 10.11.3, frequent crashes while inputting music. Most frequent associated event: using keypad to establish note value. But crashes at other times as well.

Ed,
You're not using a screen reader with Sibelius are you? Or perhaps something that behaves a bit like a screen reader, perhaps a keyboard shortcut tool like QuickKeys or Keyboard Maestro?
sbrownsparg,
Sib 7.5 isn't officially supported on El Cap, but in our experience it's been much more stable than you describe. I suspect something unique to your machine somehow. Have you got any external hardware/extras attached to your machine? I would first try updating any associated drivers, and if nothing improves then removing them from the equation completely and see if you get improved results. For some devices you may need to uninstall the driver completely from the system.

Hi all. Late to the thread, but FWIW, I have been a Sibelius user for MANY years through sib 5 onwards, with a huge array of combinations of windows versions, sibelius version and hardware, and without exception it has ALWAYS crashed for me when editing text. Specifically lyrics, instrument names and chord symbols. System text, technique text, plain text seems to be immune. I have wasted countless hours over the years trying to find a solution without success. I now only input lyrics from a text file which never crashes it. If I have made a mistake even with a single lyric, it is far quicker to edit the txt file and input the entire block rather than click on the single syllable and have sib crash and have to reload it again. Unfortunately no such solution with chord symbols so I just have to enter a few at a time then save. I usually get 10 done or so before it crashes. consequently guitar music is not my favourite thing! If anyone finds a solution I would be absolutely amazed and very grateful!

Too much editing of text strings could certainly crash Sibelius 7. I remember it made researching this topic on Metric Modulation text rather difficult!
Seems to have been sorted out in current versions. Can't complain that nothing gets improved!

Third-party utilities such as 'Roboform' are known to cause this.
The solution to your problem is almost certainly to be found outside Sibelius. The symptoms you describe are not commonly reported from other Sibelius installations.
I suggest that you conduct an audit of all add-on utilities installed on your computer.

Sib. 7.1.3: Adding a solo violin part for one section ONLY
Posted by amybalcomb - 06 Aug 02:44PM
I'm stuck!
I have one small section (12 bars!) in my composition which I think would make a lovely violin solo. However, I only want to add the solo stave to this section and NOT have it showing right the way through the score.
I read somewhere to add the solo stave (done), enter the music (done), go to 'parts' window (done), select the violin 1 part (highlighted entire stave) and then one should deb able to click on 'staves in parts' and add the solo to the violin 1 part. It's not allowing me to click on 'staves in parts'; it remains greyed out.
This might not be the correct way of doing this but I would appreciate some guidance please. Thanks.

Why not try creating a new Dynamic Part, including both violin staves?

What is a dynamic part? What does it do? How is it different to other parts?
Does it just 'appear' in the score where the notation is written in for it?

A 'Dynamic Part' is what Sibelius calls the part scores that are automatically linked to the Full Score. Sibelius automatically creates a Dynamic Part for each staff in the score, but you can create other Dynamic Parts with multiple staves in each Dynamic Part.

Ok. I think I understand.
So rather than adding the new stave for the solo violin I instead create a dynamic part?
I need more instructions from here I'm afraid. How does it link to the violin, does it appear throughout the score & if so how do I hide it?

No, you need a staff for the new Solo Violin in the Full score.
But, rather than trying to modify an existing Dynamic Part to include the Solo Violin staff, create a new Dynamic Part with the Violin 1 and Solo Violin staves included in the definition of the new Dynamic Part.

So to be clear:
Delete solo violin part
Create new dynamic part - will this then ask me to add the staves I want, ie solo and violin 1?
What will this do?

I'm not clear what you mean by 'part'. If you mean the solo violin staff in the Full Score, then: NO, do not do that.
> Create new dynamic part - will this then ask me to add the staves I want, ie solo and violin 1?
Yes. Tab Parts -> New Part will display a list of staves in the Full Score, and you can choose which to include in the new Dynamic Part.
> What will this do?
Create a new Dynamic Part with the chosen staves showing.

What's the difference then between just adding a new stave which is what I've done with the solo violin stave and a dynamic part?
I'm sorry if I'm being thick but I'm being told what to do but not why!
I'm also still unclear whether the solo part will be seen from the beginning (with lots of empty bars visible and only 12 bars of notation) or whether it just appears where needed

You asked how to create a Dynamic Part with Violin 1 and Solo Violin showing. That's what I've told you how to do.

That's up to you to 'Hide Empty Staves' for the passages where the Solo Violin is tacet.

Forget the concept of adding a new stave JUST where required. Add it to the whole score, use Hide Empty Staves to do what it says it does.
A Part may contain any number of instruments. Make one with both. Hide Empty... works in Parts too.
If you add the extra stave using Add Stave Above in Add/Remove Instruments, it will automatically appear in its 'parent's' Part.

I apologise if my questions are annoying but I come to this forum for guidance. I am completely self-taught & occasionally run up against issues.
Numerous people in this community have been extremely helpful but unfortunately, Robin, Im finding your responses somewhat blunt and unnecessarily snide.
I'm a part time music teacher & understand the benefits of explaining more fully a scenario when a student becomes confused.
I still don't fully understand this subject. Would someone else please walk me through this because I don't feel that I am getting anywhere currently.

To return to your original question:
After clicking on 'Violin Solo' (or whatever you've called your new instrument) in the 'Staves Available' list, the 'Add to part' button should become active. Is this not happening for you?
Don't mind Robin. He has vast computer knowledge, which makes him enormously useful to this group. But he does like a precise question!

Just go to your main score layout and add solo violin (see pic attached).
Then go to Layout > Hiding Staves > Hide Empty Staves
and your solo violin will be hidden whenever it has no notes.
Or, alternative, if your first violins have no other music at where the solo violin comes in, just write 'solo' when the solo comes in, and back to 'tutti' when it goes back to ensemble.
